Hairless Dogs
One of the toughest paradoxes that many animal lovers face is being allergic to pet dander and wanting to have a dog of their own. Unfortunately, all dogs shed and some more than others. However, dog lovers need not fret because there are certain breeds of dogs that are hairless and do not produce the pet dander that many people are allergic to. These hairless breeds include:
- American Hairless Terrier
- Chinese Crested (hairless)
- Hairless Khala
- Peruvian Inca Orchid
- Xoloitzcuintle
Temperament
Though no two dogs are exactly alike, many of the hairless breeds listed above are very playful, loving, and good with children. Some breeds are friendlier to strangers and other dogs than other breeds. The Hairless Khala, for instance, can be very standoffish and even ignore strangers in your home. When children play with hairless breeds it is important to teach them not to be rough. Hairless dogs lack the protective outer coat that other dogs have and they are more susceptible to injuries.
Health
Their naked bodies leave hairless dogs more vulnerable to the elements. Many of them require sunscreen when outside and all need the extra protection of a sweater when it is cold out. Some hairless breeds like the Chinese Crested are prone to getting dry skin and require a special lotion. The American Hairless Terrier however, does not have this issue.
Exercise
Most hairless dogs require about 20 to 30 minutes of exercise a day. The Peruvian Inca Orchid and Hairless Khala should be kept in fenced in yards. The Khala is a hound and has a propensity for wandering off to follow a scent.
